Odoo 20 for Food Manufacturers: How to Cut Waste With FEFO, Expiry Tracking, and Lot Genealogy
    BK Touch, Jay Tang

Food waste rarely comes from one dramatic mistake. More often, it builds quietly: a yogurt batch sits behind newer stock, an expiry alert gets buried in someone’s inbox, or a quality complaint sends the team searching through spreadsheets for the right supplier lot.

Odoo 20 gives food manufacturers a more connected way to prevent those write-offs. The headline isn’t only artificial intelligence or a shiny new interface. It’s the way Odoo ERP connects FEFO removal strategies, expiry tracking, lot traceability, manufacturing, distribution, and Accounting in one system.

The result? Your team can make better decisions before a product becomes waste.

    FEFO > Fewer write-offs > Fresher shipments.

Start with FEFO: ship what expires first

FEFO means First Expired, First Out. Unlike FIFO, which prioritizes the oldest receipt, FEFO prioritizes the lot with the nearest removal or expiry date.

That distinction matters in Food Manufacturing. A newer lot may expire sooner than an older lot because it arrived with a shorter remaining shelf life. Odoo understands that difference and can reserve the right lot automatically when FEFO is configured correctly.

    Here’s a practical example:

A dairy manufacturer produces three lots of yogurt:

    • Lot YG-101 expires in five days
    • Lot YG-102 expires in nine days
    • Lot YG-103 expires in 18 days

With FEFO enabled for the relevant product category or warehouse location, Odoo reserves YG-101 first for customer orders and distribution shipments. If the order requires more than that lot can provide, Odoo moves to YG-102 next.

The warehouse team doesn’t have to rely on memory, handwritten notes, or a heroic employee who knows every pallet by sight. The system gives them a repeatable removal strategy.

According to Odoo’s documentation on FEFO removal, FEFO uses assigned removal dates to determine which products should be picked first.

Expiry tracking turns “almost expired” into an action plan

FEFO helps move stock in the right order, but expiry tracking helps your team see what needs attention before it becomes a write-off.

In Odoo, products tracked by lots can include four useful date rules:

    • Expiration date: When the product should no longer be used or sold
    • Best-before date: When quality may begin to decline
    • Removal date: When the lot should be removed from normal stock
    • Alert date: When the team should receive an early warning

For example, if a refrigerated sauce has a 60-day shelf life, you might configure Odoo to:

    1. Set the expiry date 60 days after receipt or production
    2. Set the removal date 10 days before expiry
    3. Trigger an alert 15 days before expiry
    4. Assign a responsible user to review the lot

That alert can lead to a real operational decision:

    • Rework the batch where food safety and quality procedures allow it
    • Prioritize the lot for a customer shipment
    • Offer a controlled markdown
    • Move it to a designated clearance channel
    • Quarantine it for quality review
    • Dispose of it with a documented reason

The important point is that Odoo doesn’t magically decide whether food should be reworked, sold, or discarded. It makes the risk visible early enough for your team to act.

Odoo’s expiration date documentation explains how these dates are calculated for purchased and manufactured products, and how users can filter lots with expiration alerts.

Lot genealogy: trace backward and forward in minutes

Lot tracking creates the backbone for food traceability.

When raw materials arrive, your team records the supplier lot. During production, Odoo links consumed ingredient lots to the finished-goods lot created by the manufacturing order. When that finished product ships, the customer delivery remains connected to the same chain.

That creates two essential directions of visibility:

    Trace backward

If a customer reports a quality issue with finished yogurt lot YG-101, your team can trace it back to:

    • The production order
    • The milk, culture, fruit, or packaging lots consumed
    • The supplier receipts
    • The dates and locations associated with those materials

    Trace forward

If supplier lot MILK-884 is later placed under investigation, your team can identify:

    • Which manufacturing orders used it
    • Which finished-product lots were created
    • Which customers or distribution orders received those products
    • Which inventory remains on hand

Instead of asking several departments to compare disconnected files, your team can use Odoo’s traceability report to investigate the lot’s movement.

This doesn’t replace your food safety program, quality procedures, or regulatory responsibilities. It does give merchants, manufacturers, and distributors a stronger operational record for investigation and controlled action. What Odoo 20 adds beyond Odoo 19

The core FEFO, expiry, and lot-tracking pattern is not entirely new. Odoo 19 already supported the essential configuration. Odoo 20’s improvement is the broader operating picture around those controls.

    Continuous production

Odoo 20 introduces a continuous production workflow that lets operators record quantities at the work-order level and release downstream operations as product becomes available.

For food manufacturers, that can support a smoother flow through steps such as:

    • Mixing
    • Cooking or pasteurization
    • Filling
    • Cooling
    • Labelling
    • Packing

Instead of waiting for a full batch to finish before the next operation begins, production can move in a more continuous sequence. You still need to define how your business handles batches, partial quantities, quality checks, and lot assignment, but the workflow can better reflect how many food lines actually operate.

    Smarter reorder rules

Odoo 20 can suggest minimum and maximum stock levels using recent demand history, including the last 30 days of sales in the release overview. It can then prepare a draft purchase order for review.

That is useful, but food manufacturers should apply judgment. A demand spike, seasonal promotion, supplier lead time, minimum order quantity, and shelf life all matter. The best reorder rule is not always the one that fills the warehouse.

    AI agents and MCP connectors

Odoo 20 also introduces AI agents that can support scheduled or event-driven workflows, while MCP connectors allow approved external AI tools to work with Odoo data and processes.

A future-facing food manufacturer might use an agent to:

    • Review near-expiry inventory each morning
    • Flag products with unusual stock aging
    • Suggest reorder rule adjustments
    • Draft supplier communications
    • Prepare a quality-investigation summary

However, AI should not approve a food disposition decision without the right controls. Human review, permissions, audit trails, and clear operating instructions remain essential.

    AI in manufacturing

The honest limit: waste reduction requires implementation discipline

Odoo 20 is powerful, but FEFO is not a switch you turn on and forget.

Waste reduction depends on the quality of your setup:

    • Suppliers must provide accurate lot and expiry information
    • Receiving teams must record lots consistently
    • Products need realistic shelf-life rules
    • Warehouse locations must use the correct removal strategy
    • Manufacturing orders must consume and create the right lots
    • Quality teams need clear rework, quarantine, and disposal workflows
    • Users need training and accountability

This is where BK Touch helps. We’re a Certified Expert Odoo Partner in Canada, based in Richmond Hill, Ontario. Our blueprint-first approach starts with operational discovery before configuration, so Odoo fits your actual manufacturing, distribution, inventory, quality, purchasing, and Accounting workflows.

Odoo includes all native apps at CAD $35.20 per user per month in the first year. For a 75-employee sample company, our comparison shows Odoo at approximately $27,600 per year, compared with $100,800+ for NetSuite and $89,500+ for Dynamics. Odoo also reports 28 million users, 21,000 partners, and the ability to replace 14+ separate tools.

Summary: fresher decisions create less waste

Odoo 20 helps food manufacturers connect the dots:

    • FEFO moves the soonest-to-expire lots first
    • Expiry tracking gives teams time to rework, markdown, or quarantine stock
    • Lot genealogy connects ingredients, production batches, and customers
    • Continuous production supports a smoother manufacturing flow
    • Suggested reorder levels help align purchasing with demand history
    • AI agents and MCP connectors open new possibilities for monitored automation

But the real waste reduction comes from disciplined implementation. Good data, practical workflows, trained users, and clear approvals turn Odoo ERP from a database into an operating system for better decisions.

Bolder planning. Better traceability. Less waste.
