Odoo releases a new major version roughly once per year, but that does not mean businesses need to upgrade every year. Odoo provides standard support for each major version for 3 years, including bug fixes and security updates.
When is Odoo upgrade necessary?
No, you don't need to upgrade every year unless you're looking for a specific new feature. Every 2 years is a good proactive upgrade cycle and every 3 years is the practical maximum to stay within Odoo standard support. If you're on Odoo 19, you must upgrade before September 2028. Past that date, you jump on extended support equal to 25% of your annualized Odoo subscription.
Odoo upgrades can be complex because customizations, integrations, third-party apps, and business workflows must all be carefully migrated, adapted, and tested.

Upgrade Planning - Identify compatibility issues, determine what needs redevelopment, and establish the upgrade and cutover plan.
Test Migration - Create a copy of production and run it through Odoo's upgrade process to the target version. Odoo specifically recommends upgrading a test database first

Adapt
Customization & Integration Upgrade — Update custom modules, APIs, third-party apps, reports, website components and integrations for the new version. Custom modules must be compatible with the target Odoo version

Validate
Testing & Validation — Test critical end-to-end processes such as sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, accounting, eCommerce and integrations, and reconcile important data
User Acceptance & Training — Have key users validate their workflows and train them on functionality that changed between versions.

Go Live Support
Production Upgrade & Go-Live — Schedule the cutover, upgrade the production database and deploy the compatible custom code. Odoo notes that production is unavailable during the upgrade process.
