Food Manufacturing and Distribution

Trace every lot.  Move food with confidence.
For food manufacturers, processors, repackers and distributors.

Discuss your traceability workflow

Odoo ERP for Food Manufacturers and Distributors in Canada

Connect purchasing, production, quality, inventory and distribution in one Odoo workflow. BK Touch helps Canadian food teams build practical traceability for daily operations and U.S. export readiness.

FSMA for Canadian Food Manufacturing
Canadian Food Exporter

Why FSMA 204 matters to Canadian food exporters

Selling food into the U.S. can bring a Canadian business within the FDA’s Food Traceability Rule. The rule covers certain foods on the Food Traceability List and can apply to foreign businesses that manufacture, process, pack or hold them for U.S. consumption. Covered businesses must keep specific lot-linked records for activities such as receiving, transformation and shipping. Review the FDA Food Traceability Rule.

Canadian businesses also need to meet applicable domestic traceability requirements. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s guidance explains the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations’ one-step-back, one-step-forward approach. For U.S.-bound products, the practical question is whether your existing records also capture the FDA’s required data for each covered activity.

Start by checking which products and activities are covered, then follow a real lot from supplier receipt through production and shipment. The table below shows where Odoo can support that workflow and where additional configuration or procedures may be needed.

Built around how food moves

From the receiving dock to the customer.

Odoo offers connected applications. The value comes from configuring them around your actual products, lots, sites and handoffs, then testing that staff capture the right data every time.

1

Lot genealogy

Lot genealogy

Link received ingredient lots, manufacturing orders, finished lots and delivery movements for backward and forward investigations.

2

Expiration & FEFO

Expiration & FEFO

Track expiry, best-before, removal and alert dates. Configure FEFO picking by category or location, then validate it on your warehouse routes.

3

Barcode-led execution

Barcode-led execution

Scan products and lot information during warehouse operations using configured Odoo Barcode and compatible labels or scanners.

4

Manufacturing control

Manufacturing control

Connect bills of materials and manufacturing orders to ingredient consumption and finished batches.

5

Quality evidence

Quality evidence

Prompt staff for checks at receiving, production or delivery with quality control points, instructions and recorded results.

6

Distribution visibility

Distribution visibility

Use delivery records to connect lots, quantities, customers and destinations for faster shipment review.

Canada + U.S. exports

Know which rules apply to each flow.

Canadian SFCR traceability and the U.S. Food Traceability Rule have different scopes and records. A Canadian exporter should review both its Canadian obligations and whether its U.S.-bound foods and activities fall under FSMA 204.

Check the FDA Food Traceability List ↗

  • Start with product scope: FSMA 204 applies to covered Food Traceability List foods, including certain foods containing listed ingredients when they remain in the listed form; exemptions and activity details matter.
  • Map every critical tracking event: For many manufacturers and distributors: receiving, transformation and shipping. Harvesting, cooling, initial packing and first land-based receiving can matter for other operations.
  • Capture event-specific KDEs: The required data varies by event. Traceability lot codes, source information, product and quantity, locations, dates and reference documents need a defined capture method.
  • Plan for retrieval: Covered records must be available to FDA within 24 hours of request, or a reasonable time FDA agrees to. A sortable electronic spreadsheet can be required in specified situations.

Current U.S. timing (verified October 19, 2026)

FDA Logo

The original FSMA 204 compliance date was January 20, 2026. FDA says Congress directed it not to enforce the rule before July 20, 2028; FDA has separately proposed moving the compliance date to that date. Treat this as preparation time, not a software certification or blanket exemption. FDA status

Practical implementation map

CTEs and KDEs, translated into Odoo work.

This is a planning map for common manufacturing and distribution events, not an exhaustive legal KDE checklist. Confirm the exact requirements for each food, activity and exemption with the FDA rule.

Event / activityRecords to plan forOdoo foundationConfiguration and validation
ReceivingIncoming TLC; food description, quantity, receipt date, supplier/shipping location and reference document, as applicable.Purchase, Inventory, BarcodeRequire lot capture; map supplier TLC separately from internal lot where needed; record physical locations and reference documents; test scanned receipts.
TransformationInput TLCs and quantities; output food, quantity and new TLC; transformation date and location, as applicable.Manufacturing, Inventory, QualitySet lot-controlled components and outputs; define when a new TLC is assigned; record actual consumption, rework and co-products; test genealogy.
ShippingShipped TLC; food description, quantity, ship date, origin and recipient locations, and reference document, as applicable.Sales, Inventory, BarcodeRequire lot selection and validated pick/pack scans; capture ship-to physical location and customer references; test exports across facilities.
Traceability plan & responseWritten procedures, covered-food identification, TLC assignment method, contact and record location; timely retrievable records.Documents or controlled external repository; Odoo reportingMaintain approved written procedures; build event-specific export/spreadsheet; run a mock recall and timed FDA-style retrieval.

TLC = traceability lot code. CTE = critical tracking event. KDE = key data element. TLC assignment is an event-specific rule; shipping alone generally does not create a new TLC.

Where this pays off

Designed for real operating moments.

Find affected customers quickly

Trace a questionable ingredient lot through production batches to finished lots and outbound deliveries. Review exceptions before a recall decision.

Reduce expiry surprises

Use lot dates and configured FEFO rules to prioritize stock with nearer removal dates, while checking holds and customer shelf-life needs.

Keep repacking records connected

Record the source lot, new pack format, output lot and quantities when a covered food is transformed or relabeled.

Prepare cross-border requests

Define which data belongs in Canadian SFCR records and which U.S. CTE/KDE records apply to your U.S. supply chain.

Implementation matters: Odoo provides building blocks; it does not automatically make an operation FSMA 204 or SFCR compliant. Data fields, partner exchange, lot-code rules, retention, export format, staff procedures and validation may need added configuration or development.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about food traceability, Odoo and U.S. export readiness

No. The U.S. rule focuses on foods on the FDA Food Traceability List and covered activities, subject to exemptions and other conditions. FDA says it covers foreign firms producing food for U.S. consumption. Check your products and supply-chain role against the rule.

No. Odoo can support lot, manufacturing, barcode, quality and shipping records. Compliance depends on your scope, configured KDEs, traceability plan, partner information, trained procedures and tested retrieval.

When lots and expiration dates are enabled and FEFO is configured on the relevant location or product category, Odoo reserves lots based on their removal dates. The setup should be tested against holds, routes and customer requirements.

Odoo lot and manufacturing records can support this path when teams record actual consumed and produced lots and preserve lot details on deliveries. A mock recall is the best way to test completeness.

List covered foods, map each physical event and KDE, define lot-code ownership, identify missing partner data, and test a sample lot from receipt through shipment. BK Touch can scope the Odoo workflow from that map.
