Odoo 20 in Canada: What Changed, What It Costs Now, and Is the Price Hike Justified?
    BK Touch, Jay Tang

Odoo 20 arrived on September 24, 2026, with fresh automation, AI tools and practical changes for manufacturing, distribution and retail. But the upgrade arrives alongside new licensing details and recent price increases in Canada. The fair question isn’t just “What’s new?” It’s “Will the new value outweigh the added cost for our business?”

Here’s a clear look at the changes, the Canadian pricing and the fine print worth checking before renewal.

    What’s new in Odoo 20?

Odoo 20 puts more emphasis on helping teams move work forward with less manual effort. The headline change is AI agents that can run processes and create or update records. They can also connect to external tools through MCP, or Model Context Protocol. Agentic AI is part of the Custom plan, and Odoo’s AI features use in-app purchase credits, so the subscription price may not be the full AI cost.

Other changes are especially relevant to businesses managing production, stock and customer orders:

    • Manufacturing: Continuous production lets teams record quantities at the work-order level and start downstream operations as product becomes available. Odoo 20 also adds side-by-side bill of materials comparisons and clearer manufacturing order cost visibility.
    • Inventory: Suggested minimum and maximum reorder levels use recent demand history, about 30 days of sales, to help prepare draft purchase orders. A unified traceability report brings upstream and downstream lot or serial information together.
    • Accounting: An AI assistant can help with reporting and audits, and the platform adds direct bill payments. Odoo has also made major changes to account structure, so accounting teams should review the impact on their workflows before upgrading.

For retail and service teams, Odoo 20 improves lead filling in CRM, adds transcription for discussions and calls, and brings Field Service into Planning. eCommerce updates include checkout improvements and Pay on Invoice. AI can help create website pages, while simplified access rights and mobile offline mode aim to make everyday work more flexible.

The long release-notes list is impressive, but don’t upgrade just to collect features. Focus on the changes that solve a real bottleneck in your business.

Canadian Odoo pricing: what you’ll pay

The following prices were verified on Odoo’s pricing page on October 7 and October 20, 2026. They’re in Canadian dollars and billed yearly. Promotional pricing applies to initial users for the first 12 months.

The Light User licence is new with Odoo 20. It covers employee self-service functions such as time off, expenses, attendance, appraisals, referrals, planning and self-onboarding, plus specified operational access, including Point of Sale, Inventory Barcode and Manufacturing Shop Floor.

One licensing detail deserves attention: under the Enterprise Subscription Agreement v13, dated September 24, 2026, an active HR employee record without its own backend user account counts as a Light User. Businesses with many employee records should review their user counts and permissions before upgrading. To access the Light User price, clients must sign a new agreement; without it, users fall under the Standard or Custom plan terms. Review the agreement and your actual Odoo quote, rather than assuming every employee record automatically receives the displayed rate.

The price hike, and the renewal details

Odoo raised subscription prices in Canada and the United States by up to 30% earlier in 2026, according to reporting by Cudio. In Canada, Standard moved to a C$44 list price, with a C$35.20 first-year offer; Custom moved to C$73 list, with a C$57.90 first-year offer. The Canadian increase came earlier in the year. In the more recent international adjustment around Odoo 20, the Custom plan increase was the notable change; Standard itself did not change in that adjustment.

Before signing or renewing, check three cost details:

    • Automatic renewal: The agreement renews automatically unless you give at least 30 days’ written notice before the term ends.
    • Renewal increases: If your current charges are below the applicable list price, the agreement allows renewal charges to rise by up to 7% per year of the previous term.
    • Added users: Users added during a subscription term are charged at list price for the remainder of that term. The first-year promotion applies only to the initial users ordered, for 12 months.

There’s also a potential 25% legacy-version surcharge for databases older than the three most recent major versions. With Odoo 20 released, versions older than Odoo 17 fall outside that window. The charge is conditional, not a blanket fee for every Canadian customer, and is based on the subscription price. The agreement says it may apply once per year, no earlier than six months after a new major release. Check your contract and version status before budgeting for it.

    Is the price hike justified?

For Standard, mostly, if you use the apps. All native apps are included for C$35.20 to C$44 per user per month, depending on when and how you subscribe. A business that would otherwise pay separately for CRM, accounting, inventory, eCommerce and other tools may find the combined cost compelling. Odoo also includes hosting, support and upgrades in its subscription, and offers a savings calculator to help compare a multi-app stack.

For Custom, the answer is more mixed. Studio, multi-company, API access and hosting flexibility can be valuable, particularly for businesses with custom processes or several entities. But a C$73 list price, the possibility of annual indexation and the cost of AI credits are real pressures. Those costs deserve scrutiny if you’re not using the plan’s extra capabilities.

The Light User licence is genuinely good news for businesses with many employees who need limited HR or operational access. For warehouse-heavy or employee-heavy teams, it may help offset other subscription costs, but only after confirming eligibility and the agreement terms.

In short: Standard’s value case is strong when it replaces several separate apps. Custom may be worth it, but the higher price should be supported by a clear business need. And if you’re on an older version, weigh the costs of upgrading against the conditional surcharge for remaining outside the covered versions.

One more thing worth keeping in perspective: even after these increases, Odoo remains the most affordable ERP in its paid, enterprise-grade class. Per-user pricing that includes every app, hosting, support and upgrades is still well below what mature enterprise suites charge, and few platforms in this price bracket can match its breadth across accounting, inventory, manufacturing, CRM and eCommerce. Affordable doesn’t mean underpowered, either. Odoo has grown into one of the most capable ERP platforms in its class, and Odoo 20’s AI and manufacturing features push it further. So the honest framing isn’t “Odoo got expensive.” It’s “Odoo raised the price of something that was already unusually good value, and still is.”

Make the decision with your numbers

Before renewal, compare the current setup with an Odoo 20 upgrade. Include your actual user mix, potential Light Users, implementation and testing effort, any AI credits, and any applicable renewal or legacy-version charges. BK Touch’s Odoo upgrade service and implementation team can help assess version changes and business workflows, because a feature is only valuable when it works for your team.

You can explore Odoo through our partner referral link. One Odoo app is free forever, and the standard trial for more than one app is 15 days. For hands-on learning, BK Touch can offer an extended 30-day multi-app trial.

    > Takeaway: Odoo 20 brings meaningful improvements, and the Light User license opens a useful new option. The price increase is mostly justified for Standard users replacing multiple tools, but Custom customers should model the real renewal cost and confirm they’ll use what they’re paying for.
